Biography
Fred’s degrees are in Chemistry. He began his career as an academic involved in teaching and research at Universities in the UK and Canada.
He then left academic life and set up a chemical consultancy. A project on the chemical control of dust in bulk solids developed into dust control and monitoring systems. Resulting from the dust work, he was asked to look at designing a bioaerosol monitor and this led to a simple device which is now used around the world in food, pharmaceutical and health industries.
In his spare time, Fred is a Saxophonist and Band Manager of the University of Greenwich big Band and the band leader of the University Dance Band Group.
Airborne Particles can be dead (dust) or alive (bioaerosols). Dust can arise from natural sources or be man made.
Fred Parrett will outline the sources, health implications, monitoring and control of dust.
Bioaerosols, the terms for airborne viruses, bacteria, moulds etc are more complex, in that their monitoring and control are more difficult. Due to this the topic is often ignored, even by microbiologists. There are sound techniques that are used and these will be described.
